Director Madhumita explains why Arjun Das was the right fit for psychological thriller John Doe: “The film needed an actor who could hold complexity without over-explaining it”

Filmmaker Madhumita is set to return to the big screen with John Doe, a Tamil psychological thriller starring Arjun Das, Sachana Natrajan and Srishti Singh. Ahead of its theatrical release on November 13, the director has opened up about the film’s casting, the performance she sought from Arjun and her approach to creating a story that balances mystery with human emotions.

Explaining why Arjun was the right choice for the psychological thriller, Madhumita said the character required an actor capable of conveying complexity through restraint rather than lengthy explanations. She said, “Arjun was right for 'John Doe' because the film needed an actor who could hold complexity without over-explaining it. The character requires restraint, vulnerability, and an underlying intensity—and Arjun naturally brings all three.”

The filmmaker also revealed that Arjun’s recognisable voice became an important part of the film’s storytelling. Instead of relying on it merely as a familiar characteristic, the team incorporated it into the narrative to add another dimension to the mystery. Madhumita explained, “Voice also became an important part of the film’s design. Arjun is always associated with a very distinct, powerful voice, and rather than treating that as just a familiar trait, we used it as an element of the story. In a psychological thriller, voice can create intimacy, unease, authority, or doubt depending on how it is placed in a scene. His voice adds a layer to the character’s presence and to the audience’s experience of the mystery.”

Madhumita further spoke about discovering a different side of the actor during the shoot, particularly in scenes that demanded controlled expressions and emotional restraint. She said, “Yes, working with him revealed a quieter, more internal side of him. People associate Arjun with a certain commanding screen presence, but in 'JOHN DOE' he had to be controlled, fragile at times, and deeply human.” She added, “Some of his best moments in the film came from silence and small shifts in expression, not loud dramatic beats.”

The director’s approach to John Doe also connects with her recent work on the Tamil web series Love Always, which premiered on JioHotstar on October 30. Adapted from the Korean webtoon Here We Go Again, the series explores marriage, relationships and second chances. Madhumita described her approach to both projects, saying, “I aspire to be a genre-agnostic filmmaker. For me, genre is only the wrapper; the starting point is always people and emotion. Love Always uses fantasy and comedy to explore a marriage, while John Doe uses tension and mystery to explore fear and truth. The emotional questions may differ, but the process is similar: understand the characters, find their contradictions, and serve the story honestly.”

Madhumita previously made her Bollywood debut with Kaalidhar Laapataa, an adaptation of her Tamil film K.D. With John Doe, she returns to theatrical cinema through a psychological thriller, which is scheduled to release on November 13.
